 Things we've done
There's not the space to tell it all, but here is a sample of what we've done over the years. We've done all sorts of things, from fund raising activities for the church or other charities, to some good times together as a church family and a community. Keep a watch out in the village, in The Wesley Centre and on this website for news of our latest adventures.
2016


In 2016, we celebrated the 200th anniversary of the opening of the first Methodist Chapel in Almondbury on the present site in Westgate. A second chapel stood at the corner of Westgate and Longcroft for many years but the churches amalgamated in 1960 and a new church was opened in 1968. A series of special services and events were held to celebrate this 200th Anniversary. [More...].


A couple of church members brought together a group of volunteers within the Church to clear the chapel to accommodate four large gazebos. Each gazebo was then transformed into an interactive scene from the Christmas story. [More...].


For over 20 years Andrew Kirby has led the Wednesday evening summer walks around our beautiful Kirklees countryside and beyond. Sadly these walks have now come to an end, but there may be a walk again sometime during the year. Keep your eyes open for further news. [More...] Check [This Weeks Diary]
2014


Folk from Almondbury Methodist Church and the local community met at The Woolpack for an evening of fun and fundraising, which included an 'Auction of Promises' and a light supper. All proceeds went towards the church roof. [More...].


Every year Almondbury Methodist Church Panto Group perform a classic pantomime. If you missed 2023's fantastic panto production of 'Aladdin - Adventures In The East', you missed out. Make sure you keep your eyes open for Cinderella in Feb 2024[more...].
2013


During Advent 2014 we had invited a number of local community groups and organisations through Almondbury to create a display in Church as part of our Nativity Festival. The response had been excellent and we had over 18 excellent displays including our local schools, uniformed groups and some shops in the village. [More...]


On the 29th June 2013, we held a special Water Weekend to support a Methodist Relief Development Fund Project in Uganda. Our aim was to raise enough money to buy a water tank for a school in Uganda. As part of the weekend, we invited local groups and organisations to come along and create their own garden/water display. [More...].
2012


During Advent in 2012, we held a series of sessions to discuss another of Abbott Christopher Jamison's books, 'Finding Happiness'. This book looks at how the benedictine monks follow the wisdom of St Benedict in their everyday lives and how they remove those obstacles which prevent them from finding happiness. [More...].


Based on the successful performance in 2011 of the musical 'From Pharaoh to Freedom' by Roger Jones, the Circuit wanted to bring together the Circuit Choir again for another musical. [More...].

In 2011, people from Almondbury Methodist Church and other churches in the Huddersfield Circuit came together to form a Circuit Choir to perform 'From Pharaoh to Freedom' by Roger Jones. [More...].


Following our previous Lent Sessions held in 2010, we came together again for another series of sessions, to discuss 'Finding Sanctuary' by Abbott Christopher Jamison. The sessions were well attended and very well received. Through reading books and open discussion we are able to grow in faith as Christians. [More...].

Following our previous Lent Sessions held in 2009, we came together in groups over another series of sessions, but this time to discuss 'The Good Man Jesus and the Scoundrel Christ' by Philip Pullman. These sessions were well attended and very well received. Reading books such as this and discussing how we found it, is only one way of how we explore our faith. [More...].


As one way of exploring our faith further, we have used the 'Living the Questions' DVD and notes pack. Each episode is based on a specific theme and includes clips of various theologians across the world, sharing their views and thoughts, to help open up discussion and questions for small/house groups. Our first Messy Church at Almondbury started in 2010. Paint, playdoh, stickers, God, cakes... Come and experience church the Messy Way. This is a time where children, their families and friends can get together and be creative with a variety of themed craft activities. [More...]. Check also [Coming Soon].
2009


As part of a Sunday morning service, the choir and congregation took part in 'Anno Domini' by Raymond Smith, a musical service using a variety of multimedia. See [More...].


As part of our Harvest weekend back in 2009, we invited three experts to lead sessions for the community on getting creative. This included photography, pottery and painting workshops. The weekend was well attended and everyone had a great time being creative! [More...].


As part of our Harvest weekend we invited local groups from around the village to come and build their own special gardens in the chapel. This was a great event with many people coming to take part, get involved and visit the displays. This was only one part of the weekend. See [More...].


For Lent Sessions held in 2009, we met together in groups over a series of sessions to discuss 'God of Surprises' by Gerard Hughes. These sessions were well attended and very well received and this has encouraged us to read more books, as a means of exploring our faith. [More...].
2008


Between August and November 2008, our very own Paul F (a former Come Dancing Medal Winner) taught 9 couples to ballroom dance. Have a look at the Dancing Diary to see how they got on. At the end of the classes, our couples and others strutted their stuff in a gala dance night.


The Almondbury Youth Action Project was setup in 2008, with the main purpose of coordinating work with young people in the community.[more...]


Following the success of last year's Christmas weekend, we thought we would hold another in 2008. This time we held a Grand Christmas Coffee Morning, a Christingle Service and another Christmas Tree Festival, inviting groups from around the community to decorate their own trees.
2007


In 2007, Trisha Brown from the Communities United project ran a dance and drama group on Thursday afternoons for girls aged 8 to 14 years. The end product was a short concert for parents and friends. [more...]


We've always got something going on around Christmas. In 2007, we had a special Christmas weekend which included a Grand Christmas Coffee Morning, an evening with the Huddersfield Junior Choral Society and a Christmas Tree weekend involving groups from around the community decorating their trees.


Local celebrity chefs, mystery ingredients, quiz, and a charity. Mix it all together and you have a great afternoon, tasting some fabulous food, and raising money for charity. Sounds great! [More...].


Members from Almondbury Methodist Church and community friends have raised funds for the church, and other charities, by a series of sponsored bike rides all over the UK. [More...].


One of our members, Alex C, has raised and raced pigeons for over 30 years. 30 birds have been offered for sponsorship by members of the church. [More...].


We completed a major building project to improve our premises for the church and the community. It took a lot of hard work and fundraising but we got there in the end and the project was a success. [More...].

1968


In 2005, Almondbury Methodist Church and staged a unique first time exhibiton which presented a perspective on community life. This included 'The Clay', Stories from 'The Forgiveness Project' and photos of community life in Almondbury [more...]


Methodism in Almondbury started with Zion Methodist Church and St Johns Methodist Church. In the 1960s, both of these joined together to form the new Almondbury Methodist Church. See some newspaper clippings of the early days....[More...].
