Sponsored Bike Rides
Members from Almondbury Methodist Church, and community friends have raised funds for the church and other charities by a series of sponsored bike rides, all over the UK.
A big thanks goes to everyone involved: the backup support teams
who have supported the cyclists, the sponsors and especially to
the riders who undertook these sponsored bike rides. Each of the
bikes rides, has been intensive and challenging, but at the same
time a source of fun and fellowship that comes from cycling together.
Bike Ride 2012 Yeovil to the Galpharm Stadium
One member of Almondbury Methodist Church, Mike C, signed up to be a part of the Huddersfield Initiative,
to raise funds for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance and the Town Youth Academy. 280 hardy individuals (including our Mike) got on their bikes and cycled
290 miles from Yeovil to the Galpharm Stadium, with a planned detour to climb the Cheddar Gorge.
It was a tough ride but the reward was worth it. The reception the cyclists received from the Huddersfield Town fans was fantastic. A massive thanks goes to everyone
who gave so generously to help raise funds for this initiative. Mike's personal fundraising came to £1600 and the collective (280 cyclists) together hoped to raise
£250,000 overall which would be a massive boost for the life-saving work of Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Thank you again to all you supported this!
Bike Ride 2007 Land's End To John O'Groats
(otherwise known as 'Le Jog')
On the 2nd August 2007, a five man team, cycled from Land's End
to John O'Groats, a journey of approximately 1000 miles, which took
15 days. A tremendous effort and a huge achievement, by everyone
involved. Roger T, Nick H, Tim B, Ben B and James B had the support
and backup from Denise H and Chris B, for the whole 15 day 1000
mile plus journey.
This bike ride raised funds for three major charities, The Yorkshire
Air Ambulance, The Stroke Association, and the British Heart
Foundation. In addition to these three charities money was raised for our good friend Chris
W, who suffered a stroke in 2006. Chris was left with, amongst
other things, the inability to communicate by speech, and it is hoped some funds would pay for a course of specialist treatment
to try and stimulate an improvement in his condition.
Bike Ride 2006 Hadrians Wall, Ravenglass to Tynemouth
Retracing the route of the famous wall built in 122 AD, an army
of 14 bikers tackled some of the worst weather ever to conquer yet
another marathon ride. The constant vertical rain for 2 out of the
3 days, could not dampen the spirits of these hardy souls who were
admirably supported by a back up crew of Kate H and Julian K, using
a huge transit van kindly provide by Pentagon Dealers in Sheffield.
Despite many breakdowns and punctures all completed the ride and
raised significant sums fo money for the Grand Plan building fund
at Church. The riders were Roger T, Beth H, Dave N, Mike C, Paul
F, Vanessa T, Ben B, James B, Tim B, James B, Richard K, Matthew
B, James W, and David J.
Bike Ride 2005 Liverpool to Hull
The three day ride from Liverpool to Hull, 190 mile journey, started
on the 2nd February 2005 involving eleven riders - Tim B, James
B, Dr Ben B, Dave N, Mike C, David J, Charles H, Vanessa T, Roger
T, Paul F, Nick H, with Ian K providing the support.
Each of the riders was raising sponsorship, for The Wesley Centre,
Almondbury's community centre.
According to the organisers forecast, we should have ridden
about 168 miles but poor signage and bad map reading meant that
we took the long route. It could have been worse had it not
been for the assistance of a Liverpudlian bike rider who decided
to help and join up on the way. We didn't realise it at the
time but this additional rider, John, was to show us the way
in more ways than one and provide us with an experience and
lesson, none of us will ever forget.
Bike Ride 2004 Berwick to Scarborough
Nine riders took part in our Grand Plan sponsored bike ride
this year and completed over 200 miles of cycling in the three
day event, which started on Friday 3rd September from Berwick
on Tweed. The riders were Nick H, James B, Paul F, Mike C, Andrew S, Peter E, Roger T, Vanessa T, and
Tim B, with support by David N (unable to take part this year due to injury).
Four of the riders were not associated with the Church,
but supported 'the Grand Plan' and the links between
the community.
Bike Ride 2003 Workington to Newcastle
More information to follow...
Where Next... Plans are for another bike ride in mid September 2008 - the destination is not yet known but the hard work has started.
If you would like to join in, either supporting our cyclists or
getting on your bike for the next sponsored bike ride please get
in contact with Mike C.
Please note: All riders
associated with the above bike rides were responsible for their own portion of costs
(costs associated with the ride, including transport, accomodation and food). This money was
not taken from funds raised, but paid for by the individual rider (between £100-£150 per person). |
